The wall painted village

The wall painted village
“It all started with a paint and brush against the wall at the navigation of an artist…and now we see a whole art village…
Tafari Art Village, 10km from Oshakati in the Omusati region in the northern part of Namibia gets frequented by more than 100 visitors in a year, but before it was an art village, it was a normal Oshiwambo traditional homestead in the Uukwangula village in the Okatana constituency.
Behind this buzzing creative space is Josia Shikongo Shilongo whom after returning home to Namibia from Ethiopia where he spent 4 years as part of his art residency and creating and having art exhibitions decided to paint the walls of his homestead in which he was raised.
These colourful walls grew into something beyond colour aesthetics, it bloomed into Tafari Art Village where visitors can camp, buy souvenirs and settle into art reading at the heart beat of solitude, and nature. In 2008 Shilongo was a lecturer at the College of the Arts in Windhoek before he took up the art residency in Ethiopia.

When Shilongo return home in (year) penetrating the art market and rebuilding a clientele proofed to be puzzling and that’s when Tafari Art Village came to birth as the painted walls drew the attention of people to his homestead.
Now Shilongo coordinates other creatives in his community and accommodates their works at the art village where he sells them at a commission.
Today the art village offers painting classes, self-catering camping sites, an art shop, and tours in the surrounding…
Initially visiting the art village was at no cost, however as it continues to gain more popularity, N$10.00 is charged per visitor for operational functions.
A variety of crafts such as jewellery, paintings, sculptures, clothing, woven carpets and artworks can be found in the art village shop.
The art village is open for visiting during Saturdays and Sundays, however considerations to open it on weekdays will be looked at in the future.
